In 2015, after organizing an International Conference on Big Cities in Barcelona and Rome, the “Antoni Gaudí Foundation for Big Cities” was established in Barcelona, with the aim of contributing to the humanization of large urban centers. Currently, 52% of the world’s population lives in big cities and the percentage is growing inexorably. This raises a new paradigm in the forms of human relationships, including the interactions with the environment and ecosystems.
Now, this Foundation organizes the II International Conference “Laudato Si’ and Big Cities” to address the ecological and environmental issues of these cities in the planet. “Laudato Sí’”, the encyclical of Pope Francisco dedicated to the ecology, has a good reputation in the scientific and technical world and will be used as starting focal discussion point to address the environmental, social, ethical and management aspects associated to Big Cities.
The Conference will be held in Rio de Janeiro, July 13-15, 2017. It will be focused in three key environmental issues of the present and future lifestyle of urban citizens: water, air and waste.
The Conference will have a marked practical approach to evaluate the reality of each of these three topics in the urban world. It will also be devoted to get progress into improving and solving the environmental problems associated to air, water and waste and to highlight the ethical requirements related with them.
How do these problems challenge human consciousness?
How do they inspire decision-making to advance and improve in the respect of our common home, Mother Earth?
To what extent do these decisions contribute to humanizing human life in large cities?
